Reintroducing Edgegap's Smart Fleet Manager

Key Highlights

  • Edgegap’s Smart Fleet Manager is a container-based game server orchestration solution that offers efficient server capacity and just-in-time deployment over traditional fleet management.

  • It provides better player experience through up to 58% latency (”lag”) reduction, minimal downtime for maintenance, high scalability, and flexible DDOS mitigation.

  • It’s benefits impact directly every game type (see comparison below) uniquely. See what’s right for your game!

Game Server Orchestration & Fleet Management

Orchestration is the process of managing and deploying servers to ensure the smooth functioning of a gaming application. It involves managing the infrastructure to provide optimal performance, scalability, and uptime while minimizing latency and downtime for players.

Fleet management has been the standard for orchestrating game servers for years. The traditional method manages and deploys servers through multi-CPU server deployment as a single unit. In Fleet Management, these multi-CPU servers scale up automatically when capacity on the existing server base reaches a certain threshold.

This means server capacity is wasted away because fleet management must pre-emptively deploy servers with a large footprint to accommodate player demand (see graph).

Recently, container orchestration has made running smaller game server instances simpler. Empowering game developers to use a more efficient type of orchestration called Session Deployment.

Edgegap’s Smart Fleet Deployment

Edgegap’s Smart Fleet Deployment orchestration benefits from the composability of containerized game servers. In other words, smart fleets do not suffer from “cold starts” or overcapacity usage as they can be deployed just in time as player demand increases. This leads to additional benefits including increased server capacity efficiency, just-in-time deployment, greater security and more.

Additionally, Edgegap’s platform automatically distributes the workload among the servers of its market-leading 615+ locations worldwide just-in-time and on-demand, ensuring that players are assigned to the server closest to them (”proximity hosting”). This optimized gaming experience for each player results in reduced latency (”lag”) by up to 58% for faster, more responsive multiplayer gameplay. This near-zero lag experience ensure the market’s lowest latency conditions regardless of players’ platform, location or internet access type.

Game developers must consider their specific needs when deciding which orchestration method to use. To optimize the online experience for each player, the ideal solution must provide greater scalability, and handle server updates and upgrades with minimal downtime which session deployment ensure.
