Play-to-earn games : How to optimize your player experience and security

Blockchain tech and cryptocurrencies are creating a new breed of games that offer players digital assets as rewards that can be collected and then sold or traded on NFT marketplaces. According to many industry pundits, play-to-earn (P2E) games, as they are called, are poised to take over the video gaming industry within just a few years. However, as many naysayers as idealists think P2E games are just a fad and will die in a few months.

The term “Play-to-earn” is similar to the term “Free-to-play” in that it defines how players pay and interact with a game. It’s the most exciting aspect of blockchain/NFT-based games because it gives players ownership of the time they spend on the game. As they spend more time developing these characters or increasing their item level, the NFTs increase in relative value and can be traded at a higher price than their initial purchases. Monetization is now a two-way street: players can spend money—but, in theory, they can also now earn money from playing the game. In theory, these games are also part of the crypto ecosystem, which often gets inflated or deflated based on the market for this new type of currency.

Challenges for P2E game developers

Because of blockchain, NFT and P2E titles can be potentially highly lucrative; they attract a whole set of hackers and cheaters, which creates the need for game developers to consider modern approaches to eliminate the possibility of users cheating.

In a nutshell, users of P2E games should never be able to cheat, even in the case of a single-player game. In the case of a multiplayer blockchain game, for example, server authority and fairness are an absolute necessity. A few players cheating or having an unfair advantage could collapse the entire in-game economy.

Naturally, game developers are exploring ways to mitigate how cheating occurs from the client side through multi-accounting searching, players’ client validation, aimbots protection and the like.

But did you know there is a better approach to getting rid of the cheating server side?

Edgegap: Leveraging the power of servers for P2E game security and performance

Edgegap enables developers to host authoritative game servers for blockchain games that, in turn, monitor players’ inputs and ensures the validity of each player’s commands. If the orders are not legit, the player’s controls are not considered, making sure other players remain unaffected.

With Edgegap’s NoOps technology, hosting and scaling authoritative servers becomes easy. Package your game server, and Edgegap will launch it when it is needed, where it is required. You don’t worry about scaling or handling multiple regions ever again. Edgegap does the heavy lifting for you by distributing your servers in suitable locations.

Moreover, Edgegap adds an extra layer of security along with DDoS protection for your game. We’re currently integrated with several blockchain game developers, including blocktrucks.io, to guarantee that their games are fair and cheat-free while offering a stellar, lag-free player experience.
