A Simple, Fast Migration

Moving LEGO® Party! to Edgegap's Edge Cloud was straightforward and low effort for the team. The production rollout went live on schedule, with servers booting correctly from day one and no wave of connection issues to manage.

Support Before, During, and After

Support Before, During, and After

Edgegap's team was hands-on throughout. From load testing guidance and regional server setup to diagnosing configuration issues quickly, the support continued well past the migration itself, the way a real technology partnership should.

Scale and Availability for a Global Brand

Scale and Availability for a Global Brand

With on-demand deployment across 615+ locations worldwide, LEGO® Party! has the server capacity and worldwide reach to match one of the most recognized brands on the planet, ready wherever players want to play

The Studio

SMG Studios is dedicated to producing games with original and licensed IP across all platforms, with studios in Sydney and Melbourne, Australia, and Los Angeles in the US. LEGO® Party! is published by FICTIONS, a video game publisher and developer founded in 2025 that launched by acquiring the Private Division catalog while building a new slate of original projects.

Together, they brought LEGO® Party! to life. It's a 4-player party game where players compete across wacky Challenge Zones and 60 hilarious minigames drawn from beloved LEGO sets like Pirates, Space, and NINJAGO®, chasing Golden Bricks by any means necessary. With cross-platform (including console, PC and Netflix's TV steaming app), online multiplayer, couch co-op, and over a billion minifigure combinations, it's a game built for friends to play together, near or far.

The Challenge

As LEGO® Party! was already live, the challenge was moving an existing, running game's server infrastructure onto a new platform without disrupting the players already enjoying it.

Any migration like this carries real risk. Servers need to come up cleanly, regional coverage has to hold, and the transition has to happen without a flood of connection complaints. On top of that, a game carrying the LEGO® brand draws a broad, cross-platform, worldwide audience that expects everything to "click" into place, without any interruption. That means infrastructure which scales on demand and stays available everywhere players are.

The team needed a platform that made the migration simple, backed it with responsive support, and could scale globally without manual fleet management.

The Solution

SMG Studios and FICTIONS migrated LEGO® Party! to Edgegap's Edge Cloud, running their game servers fully in the cloud across Edgegap's regionless network. Edgegap's container-based orchestration deploys game servers on-demand and just-in-time across 615+ locations worldwide, automatically scaling with player traffic so the team never has to manage capacity by hand.

The production rollout went live on schedule in April 2026, as seamless as one could hope. As Harry Rex, Senior Producer at SMG Studios, noted the morning after going live:

"All looking good so far, we haven't been met with waves of connection complaints thus far, which we hope remains the norm."

Beyond the migration, Edgegap's platform and support helped the team across several areas:

  • Integration & Migration: Integrating with Edgegap and cutting over to production was simple and fast. With caching enabled ahead of the rollout and the migration scoped collaboratively, the team moved from planning to a live production environment cleanly, without the months of backend work a traditional setup would demand.

  • Support: Edgegap's team was a constant resource throughout the process. They provided guidance on load testing approaches and tooling, advised on using beacon locations to expose regional server options to players, and diagnosed and resolved configuration issues quickly so deployments ran exactly as intended. This support didn't end at launch, it continues as an ongoing partnership.

  • Scaling: Edgegap provides just-in-time, on-demand game server deployment and scales up to 40 deployments per second. For a globally recognized brand like LEGO®, this means LEGO® Party! can absorb sudden surges in players without the team worrying about provisioning capacity in advance.

  • Regionless Global Availability: Edgegap caches game servers across all 615+ locations worldwide and makes them available on-demand. This ensures LEGO® Party! players get an online experience wherever they are, with no regions left underserved and no restrictive, selective region-based availability launches. Those dedicated servers also give the game a neutral, authoritative meeting point for every session, which is exactly what keeps cross-play seamless. Friends on different platforms connect to the same server and play together without friction.

  • Pricing: On Edgegap's pay-as-you-go model, the team only pays for compute actually used at a single, universal price. Meaning, a predictable usage-based pricing makes forecasting straightforward as the player base fluctuates worldwide.

Conclusion

For SMG Studios and FICTIONS, migrating LEGO® Party! to Edgegap meant a clean cutover, a responsive partner, and the ability to scale a globally loved brand wherever players are.

With the infrastructure handled automatically, the team can stay focused on what matters: building the ultimate party. And in the end, that's what game server orchestration is for, delivering an online experience players actually love:

"Very fun game to play with friends... probably one of the best co-op party games I've tried."
